Unsigned Spotlight: Junro

The foundation of Junro's unique, yet melodic tonal disposition is derived from the varying musical experiences and backgrounds of each of the members. This, married with the technically astute instrumentation and thoughtful lyricism, centers the band's multi-layered soundscape.

Please list all of your band members and their roles in the band.

Dave Nelson, singer and guitar player. Dan Roellke, bass player and Matt Levesque, drummer.

For starters, what bands were you guys a part of prior to Junro? How long has the band been around?

Man, what band doesn’t have a massive list of bands that came before. A Fine Line, Tip the Van, Gunpowder Temple, Switch, Emerge and See, Fate Kills The Hero, and Changing Season. I think that’s all of them?

What’s the origin of that name and have you changed the band’s name before?

The name is unfortunately just a jumble of letters from our names, NSYNC style. We’ve talked about changing so many times but you always grow to hate your band name and we know we’ll just end up hating the next one too. We have decided to stop correcting people on the pronunciation though. At this point, how you say it is part of the mystery….

Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs and do you think these topics will change over time?

We all have a pretty heavy hand in all aspects of writing, maybe with the exception of lyrics. Usually someone will start with some riffs, we piece them together and I’ll change up the guitar to work with our style and then we go back and forth as Matt adds drums, Dan adds bass, and we all give feedback to everyone along the way. I usually finish with vocals over top all that and then more refining. We’ve gotten pretty good at taking our ego’s out of the equation and we’re all open to comment on each other’s instruments and parts.

The lyrics are usually inspired by conversations I have with other people in my head. Things I want to say, or things I have said but regret saying that way. I kind of have always used songwriting therapeutically that way. I hope my thoughts about my relationships are relatable enough for other people to gravitate too, but I’ve talked about that fear in my songs as well haha.

What bands are currently inspiring the music that you’re making?

That’s so different for all of us and what makes our musical relationship work so well I think. I’m currently obsessed with Everything Everything’s new album Raw Data Feel which is very unlike our music. I think Matt’s listening to Coven, The Midnight, and Alyna. And Dan is continuously pumping Colors II by Between the Buried and Me on repeat.

Was there a particular band/artist or concert that inspired you to start a band?

So amazingly we got the opportunity to work with one of Andrew Groves who is the singer and guitar player for the band Arcane Roots which was a huge inspiration for the sound and vibe of this band for me. It’s been incredible to work with him and get his feedback after years of listening to their records non stop and really cool for us to grow as artists towards and away from that sound.

What do you do to prepare for a show? Any flexing, exercises, etc …

Aww man right now it’s all about the tech. We’ve got this thing we call the “The Box,” because it’s well… a box. But it’s filled with everything we need for shows; click, backing tracks, midi, guitar modellers, lights data, and in-ear monitoring. It’s been a bit of a headache to put together and get running but when it works, it’s incredible. So quadruple checking “The Box,” has become our ritual.

What has been the biggest highlight of the band’s career so far?

Honestly it's the cheesy answer, but getting to this point right now. Surviving the pandemic as a band and coming out the other side with this EP that we are so proud of is the biggest highlight. I’m sure I’m going to say the same thing about the next release but it doesn’t mean it’s not true.

If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?

This is tough. We’re all in our thirties, have day jobs, and two of us have kids. Our serious touring days are probably over. That said, maybe Metallica because we’d probably be staying in hotels at least?!

Is there anything else you would like to add?
