Unsigned Spotlight: James Ross

James Ross strives to bring back an originality to the rock/pop scene through his diverse set of music. Through his childhood and early adult years, James moved around to many different places and was exposed to a wide variety of music. Because of this, he draws from many different influences and it's reflected throughout his music. He often says, "music is the universal language that can connect all different kinds of people." James strives to do just that with his budding musical career.

Please list all of your band members and their roles in the band.

I don’t have a band that writes and regularly tours with me as of now, but the members who recorded my EP with me are:

Albert Smith – Drums

Ethan Buob – Electric Guitar

Tanner Mills – Bass

What’s the origin of that name and have you changed the band’s name before?

The “band” as of now is just my name, James Ross.

Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs and do you think these topics will change over time?

I write all my own music, and so far all of my songs have a direct and tangible influence from my life. Because of that, the topics are very liable to change as I continue to grow as a person and experience new things in life.

What bands are currently inspiring the music that you’re making?

My biggest influences are:

Gavin DeGraw, Jason Mraz, Ed Sheeran, One Republic

What do you do to prepare for a show? Any flexing, exercises, etc …

Not much on the flex or exercise front, but I try to just relax and have fun. The more fun I have on stage, the more fun the audience has listening and singing my music with me.

What has been the biggest highlight of the band’s career so far?

So far, the highlight has been doing a co-write with up and comer, Devin Dawson. He made a YouTube mashup of a Taylor Swift song that got roughly 30 million views and because of that video he now gets to open for Taylor Swift. He brought a real professional, but enjoyable attitude to the table while we were writing the song.

In the near future (June) I will be working with FastTrack Seattle, an artist development company that developed current mega-YouTube star, Andie Case. I will also be doing a video or two with Andie herself!

If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?

I would love to go on tour with Gavin DeGraw. He has high energy and performs very well live. Our styles would also mesh very well together on tour.
