For starters, were you part of any bands prior to your solo project?
When I was younger, I played in a couple small projects, but I have been a solo artist for most of my career.
What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs and do you think these topics will change over time?
I try to keep in perspective that life isn’t all about just individual moments or things or people, but it is an amalgamation that is constantly moving - that is a theme i try to weave throughout my songs. I think the lense that I look through changes over time, and I like to think that my fans change and grow with me over time.
What artists are currently inspiring the music that you’re making?
Right now I’ve been searching for inspiration from any artist who has been taking big risks on their own music; the two I think of are Lucero’s album Among The Ghosts, The Wonder Years’ Sister Cities. Pulling back and reimagining the core of such legendary bands is a huge risk; and having the courage to take that risk is so inspiring to me.
Was there a particular band/artist or concert that inspired you to get into music?
It’s hard to pinpoint just one artist or concert that really made me want to pursue music; but I think seeing my friends on stage continues to make me fall in love all over again with the industry. This is a tough business to be in, but seeing my friends share their talent and to hear their encouragement keeps me going.
What do you do to prepare for a show? Any flexing, exercises, etc …
As I’ve gotten older, it’s been interesting to see how my pre-show rituals have changed. When I was younger I was really into making sure I had a couple shots of whiskey before I went on stage. Now I usually forgo the whiskey and do some stretching and vocal warm ups. I guess this is adulthood!
What has been the biggest highlight of your career so far?
Being able to share Wish I’d Known You has to be the biggest highlight so far. To me, this song is the culmination of a person growing up and
If you could tour with any musical act, past or present, who would they be and why?
The Hold Steady because their music has transcended music to become a glue that holds so many people together. Being apart of that night after night would be so electric.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
I want to thank you for the opportunity to talk about Wish I’d Known You! Also if you would like more updates on anything I am working on, follow me on Twitter and Instagram (@jaegerwells).
