Unsigned Spotlight: Inquire Within
Please list all of your band members and their roles in the band.
-Brett Larsen: vocals, guitar, bass, sound effects
-Kelby Bond: guitar
For starters, what bands were you guys a part of prior to Inquire Within? How long has the band been around?
Kelby and I used to have a death metal band called, "Sins Of A Bullet". That band went from about 2007-2013. We started writing for "Inquire Within" shortly after Sins broke up.
What’s the origin of that name and have you changed the band’s name before?
The name comes from a line in a song I had intitialy written to be on an album for "Sins". The lyrics of the song really fit where I was in life at that time. That song is now "Becoming Human" and on our debut album.
Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs and do you think these topics will change over time?
There are a lot of people involved with our songs, lyrics and vocals are all done by me (Brett). I did some of the guitar and bass, Kelby did some of the guitar, our friend Dewey did some guitar, Dirk Verbeuren from Megadeth and Devin Townsend Project did some of the drums, Kevin Talley from Six Feet Under and Dying Fetus did some drums. A total of 16 musicians from 9 countries joined in on this project.
What bands are currently inspiring the music that you’re making?
Our inspiration is all over the place; Lamb of God, Pink Floyd, Behemoth, Marilyn Manson, Whitechapel, Devin Townsend, System Of A Down, Alice In Chains
Was there a particular band/artist or concert that inspired you to start a band?
System Of A Down and Lamb Of God are probably the biggest influences on Kelby and I getting serious about music.
What do you do to prepare for a show? Any flexing, exercises, ect …
Usually, before a show, we practice the setlist one more time and then relax and have fun until it's our turn to get on stage.
What has been the biggest highlight of the band’s career so far?
The biggest highlight has been having Dirk Verbeuren hear some demo tracks and want to be part of the album.
If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?
Marilyn Manson or System Of A Down. I think those would be two of the best tour options. Partly because they are huge inspirations and influences but also because they have an audience that enjoys chill acoustic music and heavy music and we hit the extreme sides of all that.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
Check out the album on Spotify to try before you buy. We have a weirdly musically diverse album out, "Universe In My Head". We are partners with the charity, "Trees For The Future" so every album sale has a portion fund 5 trees being planted in Africa. Be on the look out for some new music next year!
