Unsigned Spotlight: Imagine the Silence
Please list all of your band members and their roles in the band.
Julien Streeby - Vocals, Nick Mavencamp - Guitar, Devin Nelson - Guitar, Joshua Barse - Bass, Eric Moen - Drums
For starters, what bands were you each a part of prior to Imagine The Silence? How long has the band been around?
Julien came from a band called “Brace for Impact,” Nick came from a country band called “Unleaded,” Josh came from a band called “At Mourning’s End,” and Devin and Eric came from jamming with random bands.
What’s the origin of that name, and have you changed the band’s name before?
We originally started as the remnants of “Brace for Impact” with some different members and intent to change the name, and finally ended up agreeing to change the name to "Imagine the Silence.” We chose the name because we couldn't imagine a world without music; it is who we are, and we wanted the name of the band to reflect us as individuals.
Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs, and do you think these topics will change over time?
We all give input on the music that we write. We try to cover a variety of topics, and try our hardest not to consistently write about the same things. We write about self-destruction, relationships, faith, and our love for music. Music is our outlet to express how we feel, and what we experience. So obviously, as our lives change, so will the themes of our music.
What bands are currently inspiring the music that you’re making?
We still have a lot of love for bands like Senses Fail or Atreyu, for the classics like Iron Maiden, and we think that what a lot of modern bands like A Day To Remember, Ice Nine Kills, and Parkway Drive (to name a few) are doing is really awesome. We really have a wide variety of influences and likes, spanning across many different styles and genres. It's hard to say what is inspiring us; we honestly just have love for all kinds of different music.
Was there a particular band/artist or concert that inspired you to start a band?
This is another difficult question for us to answer. We have loved music for our entire lives, and have known it was something we wanted to pursue for as long as we can remember. It’s hard to pinpoint the exact moment that it all clicked into place in our minds.
What do you do to prepare for a show? Any flexing, exercises, etc…?
Well, eating is very important. Julien gets the greasiest, least salty thing he can and drinks lots of de-caffeinated tea with honey. The rest of the guys just have a light meal, and plenty of energy drinks. Nick has a ritual of watching a superhero movie the night before a show. Julien, Josh, and Devin like to watch WWE and listen to music to get pumped up. We've been jamming a lot of Twenty One Pilots lately.
What has been the biggest highlight of the band’s career so far?
Our favorite memory is playing in Iowa with After the Burial, Animals as Leaders, and Chon. After the Burial is another band from Minnesota, and it was cool to go out with them and some of the other big bands in the scene to just hang out. They were very supportive and very down-to-earth dudes. That entire trip was such a great experience.
If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?
Well, obviously we all are going to say our favorite bands. For Julien, it would be Senses Fail. For Nick, it would be Ice Nine Kills. For Devin, it would be Parkway Drive. For Josh, it would be Every Time I Die. For Eric, it would be Motionless in White. Each of us just connect so well to those individual bands on an individual level, that it makes picking one specific band to tour with impossible; we'd be open to pretty much anything!
Is there anything else you would like to add?
Our debut album "Aude Distare" is out now available on most major online retailers, and we are planning on releasing something cool on Halloween that coincides with the album. We have a show with The Browning on September 21st in Minnesota; if you're in the area, come check it out!
