Unsigned Spotlight: Ian Carvalho

After releasing several albums and touring with the band NOVONADA (providing percussion and vocals) Ian Carvalho decided to embark on his solo artist journey in order to have a more personal approach to music. His solo project’s purpose is to express and convey every experience through a writing not affected by idiomatic or cultural boundaries.

Please list all of your band members and their roles in the band.

"Ian Carvalho" is my solo project. I wrote my own lyrics and music and I will be playing in my UK gigs with Thiago Jorge (synth guitar and sax).

For starters, what bands were you guys a part of prior to Ian Carvalho? How long has the band been around?

Before diving into this project I was the drummer in the band called NOVONADA. We played together for 8 years and my solo career started one year ago when the band decided to take a break from the scenes.

What’s the origin of that name and have you changed the band’s name before?

Well, that's my real name, I decided not to work under a pseudonym.

Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs and do you think these topics will change over time?

I write my songs taking inspiration from the life itself. I have a passion for philosophy, history and different cultures that I use as an incipit for my writing. My latest EP has an underlying theme (the mistake, the error) that evolves throughout the songs and that I tried to express in all of it's shades.

What bands are currently inspiring the music that you’re making?

Right now I'll say At the Drive-in, The Kills and Slaves.

Was there a particular band/artist or concert that inspired you to start a band?

Most probably was the Nine Inch Nails and Tools concert in Bologna (ITA) in 2007. After that I started working toward changing the music me and NOVONADA were making.

What do you do to prepare for a show? Any flexing, exercises, ect …

Some mental rehearsal and a bit of pint glass lifting I guess..

What has been the biggest highlight of the band’s career so far?

Definitely the Festival Vaca Amarela 2015 (Goiânia, BRA) with my former band. There, aside playing on a massive stage in front of tons of people (probably the largest audience I have ever had), I befriended lots of different musicians who's support and help have been very important during the realisation of my new project.

If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?

I'll love to tour with the same bands that are inspiring me (At the Drive-in, The Kills and Slaves) because I love their work and it will be extremely cool to be able to play with them!

Is there anything else you would like to add?

I will like to thank you for your time and I'll also love to invite whoever is in the London area to come to check me out on the 12th of November at the Finsbury! Cheers!
