Unsigned Spotlight: Holy Gold

Please list all of your band members and their roles in the band.

Keller Harbin (Lead singer, Guitar)
Brandon Henderson (Guitar, Vocals)
Heath Ladnier (Drums)
Justin Graham (Engineer, Mixer, Bass, Guitar, anything with strings, keys or buttons)

For starters, what bands were you guys a part of prior to Holy Gold? How long has the band been around?

Brandon and I (Keller) were both in the chariot. He was the last guitarist. I was the first. The chariot did their last tour in '13 I think, but I'm not 100% on that. I filled in for Every Time I die for a little while and then formed The Glass Ocean with Heath, Justin and former bassist of the Chariot Josh Beiser, along with Nick Nelson. T.G.O. Had a short run, we put out an ep and played a few tours but mostly it was a good excuse for us to hang out, play a little bit of music. We were much better at hanging out than being a band.

Brandon was in I Am Terrified and Written in Red before the chariot. I am terrified has some reunion shows this summer so you can catch Brandon at those. I'm sure they will announce dates and all that jazz.

What’s the origin of that name and have you changed the band’s name before?

Heath came up with the name, Holy+Gold. We like to poke fun at anything and everything. It has a sort of sarcastic under tone and that fits us just fine.

Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs and do you think these topics will change over time?

We all collectively write the music. So it's a mashup of southern/technical/sloppy rock n roll with some pretty shit added in. The themes I typically write about are my life, my experiences.... We all share a similar bond so I think we all relate to the material in one way or another.
It's mostly a bitch fest about how we feel religion, the "industry" (very vague, and loose quotations around that) did us wrong in some way, intertwined with my failures, drug/alcohol issues...you know typical former Christian recording artist stuff. I'm sure the theme will change with each release we do. I am constantly questioning every thing that moves so something will grab my attention and I'll focus on that and maybe, just maybe it will be happy/positive.

What bands are currently inspiring the music that you’re making?

I personally don't listen to a lot of music. Mainly because my car doesn't have a stereo. When I do, it's girl pop music.

My biggest inspirations for music come from random snippets of commercials and kids tv shows. Honestly, I hear some little jingle and then my mind starts racing and out comes a song where I'm screaming my balls off. I don't know what that means but it's true.

Was there a particular band/artist or concert that inspired you to start a band?

Garth Brooks.

What do you do to prepare for a show? Any flexing, exercises, ect …

A 12 pack usually does me alright, I haven't stretched in a long time but I'm usually stuck in front of the microphone so I don't flail around like I did in the chariot/Etid. And I'm old as shit, my back and knees hurt to much to climb up on speakers and fall off into the crowd.

What has been the biggest highlight of the band’s career so far?

We threw a paint can in a fire barrel and it exploded, sending shrapnel in every direction. We lived to tell about it.

If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?

My favorite tours were with our friends. I don't care what your band sounds like, I just like hanging out. There are plenty of great bands that I would love to tour with for one reason or another but no one specific comes to mind.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

We are putting out our record early this summer so stay tuned for that. We are taking the DIY approach with this band so we are recording, mixing, the whole nine yards our selves so that's exciting for us, and we are giving it away for free.

Thanks for taking the time to read this train wreck.
