For starters, what bands were you guys a part of prior to heyohwell? How long has the band been around?
We've all done the band thing quite a few times before this one. heyohwell has been around for about 8 months.
What’s the origin of that name and have you changed the band’s name before?
Coming up with the band name was super stressful for me. I just wanted it to be fitting, unique, and cool. It took us about 3 months to come up with the name. We had a million other name ideas but we weren’t really feeling any of them. One day I realized that I had a trend of saying "hey, oh well!" in multiple conversations about letting go of things that can't be changed and of things that tend to hold people back. The fact that the phrase kept reoccurring, aligned with our message (and had a pretty nice ring to it), made it an obvious choice.
Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs and do you think these topics will change over time?
Thus far, The songs start with Me (Hallie) writing acoustic versions of them. I come up with the general instrumental flow and then write the lyrics and melody over that. When I feel like that version is rocking, I take it to the guys and we begin to compose the full band arrangement. Hunter is really great at song structure and knowing what needs to be in there and what doesn’t. Everyone comes up with cohesive parts and it's cool to bounce ideas off of each other.
Some of the general themes are: learning to let go, coping, dealing with change, getting over it...those are all like the same thing i just said them in different ways LOL
What bands are currently inspiring the music that you’re making?
We all have a bunch of different influences so it's funny to see how people coming from different places sonically can come together. There's a lot of influence from 2000's pop punk and emo bands like Fall Out Boy, Paramore, Jimmy Eat World, etc. Lately we've each found some new inspiration in a lot of different bands (The 1975, Waterparks, Nine Inch Nails, Erra, Turnover, All Time Low). Listening to stuff thats a bit different from what we do always makes for fresh ideas and approaches to our emo/pop punk sound.
Was there a particular band/artist or concert that inspired you to start a band?
For me, strong female leads have always made me wanna do this thing. Of course, Paramore and Avril Lavigne were inspirations.. of course. Honestly just female fronted bands from every era really did it for me. Gotta shout out Maddie Finn from The Whiskey Hollow too.
What do you do to prepare for a show? Any flexing, exercises, ect …
To prepare for a show, we stress ourselves out all week and then we show up and play! No but really, I think I just sing along to a playlist I have to warm up my voice on the way to the gig and then right before our set we do a little group huddle/group prayer to center ourselves!
What has been the biggest highlight of the band's career so far?
So many great things have happened! We got to play two sold out shows, got to record in the rock and roll hall of fame archives studio, got mentioned in alternative press, got to open for some great bands, got to meet a bunch of awesome people! Everything has been a highlight.
If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?
John Mayer because well, John Mayer. (and all the influences we listed)
Is there anything else you would like to add?
Yeah! We are heading down to Kentucky in January to record our new EP and we could not be more excited. Nick Thompson from Hit The Lights and Rick King are going to be producing this bad boy and making all the magic happen. So be on the look out for that and then we will catch ya January 27th at Amity Fest with Handguns at Basement Transmissions! We have a lot of awesome things planned for 2018, can't wait! (Also our single "Small Town Syndrome" is available everywhere digital RIGHT NOW so check it out yeah?). Thanks for everything y’all, we appreciate it.
