Unsigned Spotlight: Hazel Bloom

The stylistically unique Pop artist Hazel Bloom is composed of one main singer/songwriter named Dave Carlin. He designed his stage name largely from a few main facets; the continuous blooming of love and nature.

For starters, what bands were you a part of prior to Hazel Bloom? How long has the band been around?

I was a part of Backwards Dancer (Equal Vision Records) before starting Hazel Bloom. Hazel Bloom has been around since the Fall of 2017.

What’s the origin of that name and have you changed your name before?

My friend, Mike Hazel, who passed away in January of 2016 had a huge influence on this band. He’s also the reason why I named the project ‘Hazel Bloom’. I wanted to create a type of art that resonates not only his presence but for anyone that has ever lost somebody or something. Even though they are not in this life anymore, I wanted to make something that still projects their presence; something to show that they still are making an impact on people in a positive way and to show their presence. They are still in ‘Bloom’.

Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs and do you think these topics will change over time?

Hazel Bloom is a solo singer/ songwriter named Dave Carlin. I mainly write about my own personal experiences, including relationships and mental health. My life is constantly changing and so is my writing style so I expect it will change as I grow.

What bands are currently inspiring the music that you’re making?

The 1975, LANY, Quinn XCII, Blackbear

Was there a particular band/artist or concert that inspired you to start a band?

Music really defined my whole life when I was growing up. I remember when I was about 10 years old, I knew I wanted to be a musician when I heard Ocean Avenue by Yellowcard. The feeling I got from that song instantly inspired me. At that moment I knew I wanted to create that same feeling for other people.

What do you do to prepare for a show? Any flexing, exercises, ect …

I usually warm up my voice by singing a few songs also to get me in a certain vibe.

What has been the biggest highlight of the band’s career so far?

The biggest highlight I would say is having my music streamed over 100,00 times in 75+ countries.

If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?

Panic! At The Disco, and The 1975. Both of these bands have had a huge impact on my music career and have helped tone my writing style. I’ve learned so much about music and myself just from these 2 bands. To tour with one of them would be an absolute dream come true.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Thank you so much for being here and making Hazel Bloom a dream come true for me.
