Unsigned Spotlight: Gloop

Please list all of your band members and their roles in the band.

Max Detrich - Drums

Dominic Gianninoto- vox/guitar

Blake Douglas - bass

For starters, what bands were you guys a part of prior to Gloop? How long has the band been around?

Prior Bands

Max: Bested, Cosmic Halitosis, Big Weird, Lil Huffy

Dominic: RHIN

Blake: Dead Monks, Corduroy

Dom: We have been around for about the past 2 years. I have known Blake since college and was a big fan of Dead Monks. We had talked about playing in the past and did a one off under the name Pretty Dog. I met Max through booking shows with RHIN. When he moved to Frederick, MD, I saw him at a show locally and we started playing soon afterwards. I later contacted Blake and the gloop baby was born.

What’s the origin of that name and have you changed the band’s name before?

Dom: I texted Max GOO (I had been listening to the album that day) and he texted back GLOOP.

Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs and do you think these topics will change over time?

Dom: Usually I have a basic song down and then take it to them. We then work on the structure or add parts etc. We have started to write more together recently. Blake and I work on the lyrics after we have the song down.

Blake: I listen to really blown out phone recordings of our songs and improvise what it sounds like Dom is singing to come up with lyrics.

What bands are currently inspiring the music that you’re making?

Max: Spowder

Dom: Captain beefheart, Pere Ubu, and The Contortions. I always fall back on Dazzling Killman.
Blake: All of the above, Swell Maps, Suburban Lawns, Sediment Club

Was there a particular band/artist or concert that inspired you to start a band?

Dom: I had been playing in RHIN and could see the end of the road was near. I knew I wanted to keep playing music. I was unsure of the direction at first (I thought maybe more of a dinosaur jr vibe), but a local release by Baklava (album is Dane on) really grabbed me. I started to explore some similar bands and just kept working at it.

What do you do to prepare for a show? Any flexing, exercises, ect …

Dom: Gin and Tonic
Blake: Put my bass in a case

Max: Chew some gum

What has been the biggest highlight of the band’s career so far?

Dom: We have an upcoming show with WRONG that we are pumped about.

If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?

Max: Melkbelly, they’re cool

Dom: Howlin’ Wolf, such a powerful performer/voice.
Blake: Cabo Boing!

Is there anything else you would like to add?
