Unsigned Spotlight: Ghost Town Cinema
Ghost Town Cinema is Daniel Joseph, Morgan Laubach, and a revolving door of their beautiful and talented friends, creating music to make you feel.
Please list all of your band members and their roles in the band.
At the moment, it’s just the two of us. Morgan sings and plays keys and I (Daniel) sing and play guitar. Sometimes we switch instruments. We’ve been through a few different rhythm sections since the band started in 2012, but the two of us are really the core of Ghost Town Cinema.
For starters, what bands were you guys a part of prior to Ghost Town Cinema? How long has the band been around?
I started playing in bands almost 20 years ago so it’s been a lot. We’ve played in a number of bands together including Des Sera (which was our first project together), Tenny & The Headroom, and Eskimo Wave.
What’s the origin of that name and have you changed the band’s name before?
We actually spent a year calling ourselves Rainbow Road before finding the name we’d end up using. The name actually came from our original bassist Neal Manning. We had spent months debating band name ideas and nothing was sticking. One of the names I liked was Stop Motion Cinema. Neal switched out Stop Motion with Ghost Town and everyone loved it.
Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs and do you think these topics will change over time?
I usually write the lyrics and melodies and Morgan brings her own flavor to it afterward. I don’t really have main themes or topics - as interesting things happen or interesting people come into my life they often inspire a song. Sometimes a song is from my own perspective, but sometimes it’s someone else entirely. I’ve had a few songs inspired by dreams I’ve had.
What bands are currently inspiring the music that you’re making?
It may sound strange but I’m not really listening to other bands. When I’m in a writing or recording process - I avoid consuming music altogether. I want the water to be undisturbed - totally clear.
Was there a particular band/artist or concert that inspired you to start a band?
There have been many. A major influence that got me started was a British band called Feeder.
What do you do to prepare for a show? Any flexing, exercises, ect …
I hide in my car for thirty minutes. I’m weird. The day of a show I don’t let anyone touch me. I get crazy anxiety if someone touches me before I perform.
What has been the biggest highlight of the band’s career so far?
Probably our first music video. I had directed a few videos for other bands/artists before but never one for a song of my own and it was the craziest experience. The actors were amazing. The concept came out of nowhere and everyone really got behind it. I had no idea it was going to come together the way it did until I was chopping up the footage in final cut and everything lined up perfectly.
If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?
Justin Bieber. I’m a big fan.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
Yes! So we recorded an album 5 years ago and never released it. Well, after spending the last couple weeks revisiting and completely reworking/remixing those old tracks - looks like that album is going to finally see the light of day. Just in time to serve as an appetizer for an EP of new material we are releasing at the end of the year.
