Unsigned Spotlight: Floorbird

There’s something special about being able to create in the midst of a crisis. It’s like a rose growing out of a crack in the sidewalk: unexpected and beautiful. Somewhere between the hours of Animal Crossing and wondering what day it is, a Philadelphian indie/emo band called Floorbird was born.

Please list all of your band members and their roles in the band.

Eric Reavey - Vocals/Guitar

Kevin Folk - Guitar

Drew Grahn - Bass

Tom Brucker - Drums

For starters, what bands were you guys a part of prior to Floorbird? How long has the band been around?

Eric: The whole band is very new; we started this thing while in quarantine back in March. I hadn’t been in a band since 2011 when I was in a group called Big Big Plans, and had only done acoustic stuff since then. Kevin was in a band called Brosef Gordon-Levitt. Tom and Drew are in another (awesome) band together called Andross. Their singer Tim Balch is a close friend of all of ours, and was a big factor in how we all met.

What’s the origin of that name and have you changed the band’s name before?

Eric: Candidly I had a few names tee’d up for the group…and all of them were pretty bad. Once this whole thing started, we spent a few weeks pitching ideas and nothing stuck. My wife came up with the name Floorbird (as opposed to sky bird), and that was the only name we all liked.

Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs and do you think these topics will change over time?

Eric: I typically do the ‘first draft’ of all the songs and make a rough demo, and then we hammer out the final product as a team. Most of this record has been internal-facing - mental stuff, et cetera but there are a few love songs in there. I don’t think so much about the subject matter changing, but I do hope that the sound changes over time. Not necessarily a big pivot - I want to stay grounded in what we’re good at, but continue to make it better and keep it fresh. I’d hate to make a record that sounds too much like this one 5 years from now.

What bands are currently inspiring the music that you’re making?

Eric: I’m a huge, huge fan of The Dangerous Summer. I feel like they’re painfully underrated. I also got into Dashboard Confessional a little late, so their music is still very fresh for me, and a friend of mine sent me The Band CAMINO’s album ‘tryhard’ a few weeks ago, and I’m obsessed.

Was there a particular band/artist or concert that inspired you to start a band?

Eric: That’s hard to say. This was primarily borne out of doing demos at home, and kind of accidentally putting together a home studio over time. I’d known Kevin for a while, and had tried to start bands with him before. We’d practice once, I wouldn’t have anything written and then we’d never practice again. I felt like I had to put together a solid repertoire of material before wasting anyone’s time again. Thankfully he was really receptive from the get-go, and he brought Drew and Tom into the fold from there.

What do you do to prepare for a show? Any flexing, exercises, etc …

Eric: I wish I knew! We haven’t played a show yet, and the only shows I’ve done in years were pretty low-key acoustic gigs.

Kevin: I meditate and usually sit quietly; sometimes I listen to some 90's rap.

Tom: I typically just stretch before playing lol

What has been the biggest highlight of the band’s career so far?

Eric: I’m really not sure - we’ve only been a band for a few months at this point. The record came out at the end of September, and we’re just living for the response it’s gotten so far. We had a feature on Substream right before the album release, which was pretty cool though!

If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?

Eric: The Dangerous Summer, just because they’re seriously my favorite band.

Tom: I’d love to tour with Coheed and Cambria, because of course.

Kevin: My perfect tour would be with Heart Attack Man because i want to fight Eric.

Eric: Yeah, isn’t their singer named Eric? Two Erics enter, one Eric leaves.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Eric: Just that we’re really excited to keep releasing videos and music. We’ve still got a few things in the works for 2021, and we can’t wait to share it!
