Unsigned Spotlight: Fault Lines

Please list all of your band members and their roles in the band.

There is myself (Corey) and Zack on vocals, I do screams and he does clean vocals. There is Dan and Dylan on guitar, they switch back and forth between lead and rhythm and serve as our driving force. Lastly you have Chris on drums and Joe on bass, they're our backbone.

For starters, what bands were you guys a part of prior to Fault Lines?

Well notable bands, not too many. Chris was in HEARTCAKEPARTY which had some relatively good success in our area. Dylan and myself were in a band called Everybody Loves The Hero and played a lot of local shows around TN and GA. Joe was in and formed a few bands throughout the years, and Dan and Zack weren't really in bands before Fault Lines. This is their first serious endeavor.

How long has the band been around?

We formed in June of 2013. The band forming was sort of an accident. Dylan and I who are long-time friends needed a place to move in to, we knew Chris and his friend Dan who also needed a place to move in to, so we moved into this old house in downtown Cleveland, TN. W found out that we all played instruments and liked similar music, so we started jamming and the rest is history.

What’s the origin of that name and have you changed the band’s name before?

We have never had to change our name, luckily. The real story on how we came up with the name is that we thought that it sounded cool and that it wasn't taken on all the social media websites already. (We had been trying to come up with names for hours but they were literally all taken already.) The story that we tell people, is that "fault lines" are sort of the things that cause earthquakes, they are the break that starts something big. So it didn't really have a huge meaning in the beginning, but we've kind of made a meaning for ourselves.

Who writes your songs?

This may come surprisingly to some, but we actually write them pretty collectively. Generally our formula is that any combination of Chris, Dan or Dylan will come up with some riff and a sweet drum beat, then we will take that idea and build onto it, try to make it flow nice. Then we jam it out, all come together and pick it apart until we get an instrumental we really like. Zack & I will mess around with melodies and phrasing before we finally finish the instrumental part, and then Zack & I will write the vocals at the last part of the process. It's been working pretty well for us so far.

What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs and do you think these topics will change over time?

Well, the topics that we write about have already changed somewhat. Our first EP "2151" was really the band feeling itself out. We didn't know what direction(s) we were really going for and a lot of the content is all over the place. The stuff on the new EP "Such Is Life" is a lot more cohesive. It's about real stuff. Struggle, defeat, addiction, anxiety - all the demons we have to face in our every day lives as humans. It's close to home and it's easy to write about because everyone deals with these things, we just don't sugar-coat it.

What bands are currently inspiring the music that you’re making?

There are honestly too many to count, and if you asked every member in this band you would get a different answer. Music inspires us. Art inspires us. Everything from classic rock to hip hop, and our favorite metalcore band to instrumental jazz. Seriously.

Was there a particular band/artist or concert that inspired you to start a band?

I'm really just speaking for myself on this one, but I think just being around music my whole life made me want to be in a band and just made me want to be around music for the rest of my life. My mom was in cover bands when I was younger (and even now, she's finally writing the originals she's wanted to write for a long time) and my dad ran a DJ/Karaoke service which made it's home at various bars and events around town when I was younger. It's hard not to get sucked into doing something with music because it's such an awesome thing.

What do you do to prepare for a show? Any flexing, exercises, ect …

Fault Lines tends to try and stretch it out a few minutes before we go on. Chris is usually practicing something with his sticks backstage right before we go on, Zack & I are making funny sounds with our mouths so that our voices don't go out. Joe is usually hanging around getting some laughs in and Dan & Dylan will be hanging out with people before we go on also. Every sort of does their own thing, and it works for us.

What has been the biggest highlight of the band’s career so far?

Oh man. I would either say touring with our friends in Those Who Fear back in May of 2015. We had some crazy good times on that tour. With it being our first venture beyond our 2 home states of TN & GA, it was really eye-opening and honestly extremely fun. We made a lot of good friends and connections on that tour and I think it helped prepare us for the future quite a bit as well.

If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?

Slipknot, because they are awesome and helped define heavy music for a lot of us. Beartooth, because they are relevant to our sound, and blowing up right now, and we like their music a lot. Then probably TwentyOnePilots or something. They put on an insane show and they used to get grouped in with all the alternative/hardcore bands back before they got huge, so it would be cool to have one of those smaller bands tour with them now.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Please check out our new EP "Such Is Life" which comes out January 26th, 2016. It's filled with a lot of our heart & soul and it would mean the world to a few dudes. Thanks for checking us out!
