Unsigned Spotlight: Fathom

Fathom is a deathcore/metalcore band out of Southern Ohio whose only goal is to make the heaviest music they can.

Please list all of your band members and their roles in the band.

Kyle Greene - vocals, Brandon Wallace - guitar, Austin Wiesman - Guitar, Bryant Sullivan - Drums

For starters, what bands were you guys a part of prior to Fathom? How long has the band been around?

We’ve all been in a wide variety of bands over time, Brandon and Kyle have played in different projects together for around 10 years, most notable probably having been The Paramedic. Bryant’s last band was Coldcase before Fathom. We’ve only “officially” been a band since the beginning of 2020, but had been working on our music much longer prior.

What’s the origin of that name and have you changed the band’s name before?

The origin of the name was as simple as we thought it sounded cool and were able to think up a vague meaning that could be perceived in a variety of different ways, that being “an understanding” which for us is portrayed through music. There was no shortage of possible names for this project before release but we’ve stuck with the one name since.

Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs and do you think these topics will change over time?

The first EP was entirely written by Kyle, who still does a majority of the writing but everyone’s been working to contribute more for future releases. The main themes for our songs are usually some sort of mental anguish or a certain mentality in general. This could totally change as we’re not necessarily set on one style but it will also likely remain a common theme throughout. But I also won’t limit myself from exploring other topics. Just whatever feels right at the time.

What bands are currently inspiring the music that you’re making?

Any band that I listen to and can’t resist head banging, but mostly just heavy ass bands. Some big ones for us are bands like Slaughter To Prevail, Oceano, Spite, Kublai Khan, Traitors, Black Tongue, Falsifier, The Acacia Strain, Bodysnatcher, Lorna Shore, I could go on haha

Was there a particular band/artist or concert that inspired you to start a band?

That’s real difficult to put a finger on, for me I think it’d just be a certain period of my life growing up where shows were a real frequent occurrence, the so called “golden” days of deathcore and metalcore back around 2007-2010.

What do you do to prepare for a show? Any flexing, exercises, ect …

Most of us will have some form of “warming up” before a show, which isn’t anything too crazy just basic warm ups, other than that a good session with the boys is always appreciated.

What has been the biggest highlight of the band’s career so far?

The biggest “highlight” so far would probably just be the release of our first EP and music videos, which is all we’d been working towards for the bands entire existence up until this point. We’re still yet to get to play any really cool shows with this project as our world pretty much shut down as soon as we were ready to start doing stuff.

If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?

Whitechapel, just because they’re such a long standing band in the genre and to us are one of the “pioneer” deathcore bands we grew up with, it’d just be so sick to tour with them. Traitors as well, just because they’re such a big influence on most of us and we think it’d be a really heavy tour. Honestly any band that’s been a major influence on our sound or to deathcore would be a complete honor to tour with. It would also be really cool to tour with any of the more “classic” metal bands such as Megadeth, Metallica, etc..

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Just thanks for having us on! Hope everyone digs the music, and we plan to have lots more for you in the future! Keep heavy music alive!
