Our universe exists beyond language. We share so many things that we can't express in words, and we give weight to these immaterial moments through art. The compulsive expressions of Philadelphian writer and musician, Erin Fox, is a tangible illustration of this kind; continuously documenting that which is to overcome in this thing we share called life.

Erin Fox (singer/songwriter)

For starters, what bands were you guys a part of prior to (Erin Fox)? How long has the band been around?

I started performing in and around the Philadelphia area almost twenty years ago now. I was very young when I started out performing with different relatives' bands (I come from a musical family). I've played with a number of different bands/projects over the years including SugrHi, Resilient, Babe Grenade, Insignificant Others, etc.

What’s the origin of that name and have you changed the band’s name before?

It's my own given name

Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs and do you think these topics will change over time?

I write my own songs. Sometimes, they are what I am feeling in the moment based on events that are occurring in my personal life. Other times, they are a reaction to current events that we see in everyday like (the political climate, the environment, tragedy, disaster). As the world changes and as I grow, I'm sure the subject matters will as well...but I try not to be too heavy-handed when writing a song and let it happen as naturally as I can.

What bands are currently inspiring the music that you’re making?

I try to listen to a wide variety of different types of music. I also teach music part-time and am sometimes exposed to artists that I otherwise would not check out. I guess more recently, I've been listening to Frank Ocean, Philip Glass, The Bad Plus, & Joni Mitchell a lot.

Was there a particular band/artist or concert that inspired you to start a band?

Besides my own mother (she was a singer)...I distinctly remember hearing Queen and wanting to go for it.

What do you do to prepare for a show? Any flexing, exercises, ect …

I usually just listen to something fun on the way to the gig to get myself in a good mood. I also check to make sure I didn't forget my gear probably a hundred times.

What has been the biggest highlight of the band’s career so far?

Being able to record a full length album and actually release it was pretty huge for me because of my past with controlling producers. It took a long time for me to regain control of my music and then to find the strength and confidence to release it on my own.

If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?

Ani DiFranco. She's always been a hero and inspiration of mine and I've never seen her have a bad show. I appreciate and embrace what she's trying to do for the world and adore her selfless approach to music and am in awe of how she has had a successful music career on her own terms.
