Die So Fluid are the modern incarnation of a ‘power trio’. Their sonic identity possesses the muscle of metal, the angular cheekbones of post-punk and the bittersweet heart of grunge. They are part of a new generation of rock bands who chose to turn down signing a traditional record deal and embrace the changes the internet has made to the industry by stripping record companies of their distribution and promotion monopolies. 

Please list all of your band members and their roles in the band.

Pleased to meet you I’m Grog and I am the vocalist, bass player and wearer of fancy catsuits. I write and so does Drew Richards who is the guitarist. Our drummer Al Fletcher tragically passed away from sepsis two years ago. We have somehow managed to move forward with a new album ‘One Bullet From Paradise’ and Justin Bennett from Skinny Puppy joined us on drums and mixed a few tracks. It’s become an international affair because since the band was  initially formed in London UK, I relocated to Los angeles, and Justin is a Californian now living in Italy.

For starters, what bands were you guys a part of prior to Die So Fluid? How long has the band been around?

I was in Flinch and Feline before Die So Fluid. Feline had some singles that charted in the UK and was signed to Chrysalis EMI we did some fun stuff, appeared on MTV etc. Drew was also in Feline. Before that he had history with Xmal Deutschland and Miranda Sex Garden…. I guess Die So Fluid took shape after 2000. It had kind of a false start cus I took a break after I got pancreatitis and then went off to play bass for Sporty Spice and Kelly Osbourne to raise money for DSF to record.

What’s the origin of that name and have you changed the band’s name before?

It’s like a badge of honor, even if it is just some drunken poetry taken from a random sentence. We liked it at the time cus we believe in living hard and leaving behind a beautiful legacy. Personally I’ve been in and out of love with the name, but in the end a name becomes synonymous with the music of the band, and the music speaks for itself. Plus... definitely no one else has this name. I don’t think we’ll ever be asked to call ourselves the British Die So Fluid haha.

Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs and do you think these topics will change over time?

Both Drew and I write. Sometimes separately, sometimes together. We write from what’s going on and effecting us, it can be on a more intimate personal level or addressing wider world issues which affect everyone. Or a skillfully interwoven combination of both. Topics will change as they reflect the passing of time but our messages will always come from a place of fellowship and inclusiveness. We have a great loyal fan base who appreciate that. I guess we could be misunderstood by addressing difficult or ‘dark’ subjects but music can be a way of sharing and discussing, which I think is vital right now when we need to work toward unity. We encourage and advocate full use of the brain and the heart which I think makes some people like ‘oh what I have to ‘think’ ??’  Yes dude. You do. Please.

The title of the album is ‘One bullet from paradise’ It’s from a journalist’s account of a battle with ISIS in Syria. He was describing the difficulty of fighting an enemy that holds the dogmatic belief that dying in battle will grant eternal life in paradise. Religions can be used as a tool by society to control it’s populace and the ‘reward in heaven’ is a fairly ancient ploy for inspiring men to kill or be killed.

What bands are currently inspiring the music that you’re making?

I like A Perfect Circle’s latest album... Crosses, Deftones, Mastodon,  KXM, Lynch Mob,... our friends Krash Karma :) I listen to all kinds of stuff. I’m studying Indian folk music.

Was there a particular band/artist or concert that inspired you to start a band?

Adam and the Ants, Toyah, Led Zeppelin, Sabbath

What do you do to prepare for a show? Any flexing, exercises, ect …

I do vocal warm ups, certain kinds of stretching, pranayama and meditation . I’m a yogi and reiki practitioner.

What has been the biggest highlight of the band’s career so far?

We were on a limited edition stamp in Finland. Not sure how it happened but it happened. We love Finland and one of my favourite shows ever was at the Tavastia Club Helsinki.

If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?

All three founding members of Die So Fluid share a love of Deftones. Their tone, the soundscapes, his voice and melodies... I watched them sound check at Brixton Academy and sat in on an interview with Chino on the invitation of an ex boyfriend who was a journalist once. That was pretty wild but touring with them would be a dream come true.
