Please list all of your band members and their roles in the band.
Heather St. Marie - vocals, percussion
Mat Dauzat - vocals, guitar, piano, bass, percussion
For starters, what bands were you guys a part of prior to Dauzat St. Marie?
Heather: Hydrovibe
Mat: Hydrovibe, Kelly Osbourne Band, Schuyler Fisk band
How long has the band been around?
Heather: About a year and a half
What’s the origin of that name and have you changed the band’s name before?
Heather: We toyed around with band names for a LONG time until we realized that nothing seemed to fit our duo. We put it out there to our fans to help us decide and it was almost unanimous that our last names should be used - hence Dauzat St. Marie!
Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs and do you think these topics will change over time?
Heather: We both write the songs together. There isn’t any one certain theme in our writing, but the songs always tend to have a melancholy edge. We are suckers for the bittersweet! I doubt that will change much over time.
What bands are currently inspiring the music that you’re making?
Mat: It’s funny… we go on little kicks where we obsess over an artist and will spend hours in the studio stalking their YouTube videos instead of working. We’ve been getting compared to Heart recently in a lot of reviews, which never would have occurred to us before, but we are finding that it is actually kind of appropriate. We recently watched their VH1 Rock Honors concert, and MAN - THEY ARE THE TOTAL PACKAGE! What a perfect duo! Ann is a complete badass singer, Nancy is the perfect complement with fantastic guitar work and harmonies. And all those huge hit songs!!! They are certainly inspiring and we’ve been stalking their YouTube videos recently.
Heather: We actually got to see Heart in a very small little venue a few years ago. They did a showcase for a Gibson Guitars event that we got to attend. It was AWE-INSPIRING! To experience that huge sound in such a small little room was intense. I almost felt like Ann Wilson was going to knock us down with that big booming voice!
Was there a particular band/artist or concert that inspired you to start a band?
Mat: Not really one band in particular, but I can say that classic rock bands from the 70s era were my biggest influence. I have brothers that are 10 and 11 years older than me, so I grew up listening to their music - Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Boston, Lynyrd Skynyrd, etc.
Heather: I’ve always loved to sing, but I never really considered being in a band until meeting Mat. He was putting a rock band together that would be become Hydrovibe. I auditioned, got the spot, and was immediately hooked! I knew I had found my “calling.”
What do you do to prepare for a show? Any flexing, exercises, ect …
Heather: We do vocal warmups and try to avoid talking above the crowd noise before shows. And I always have to get sleep the night before!
What has been the biggest highlight of the band’s career so far?
Heather - I’d have to say that our CD release show at the world famous Hotel Cafe in Hollywood last month might be the highlight so far. It was really cool to tour all over the country for a year and then come home to Los Angeles and play a PACKED CD release show to an awesome crowd at our favorite singer/songwriter venue in town. It was really a perfect night… we couldn’t have asked for better for our big debut CD release show!
If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?
Mat: Heart of course! I also think it would be awesome to do a tour with Chris Cornell when he does his solo thing. That would be a cool match!
Heather: Fink. I recently discovered them… they are a very unique band from England with dark, moody songs and very deep lyrics. It’s a great match for what we do, and it would be awesome to get to catch their set night after night. So, if anybody reading this knows anyone in Fink, LET’S HOOK IT UP!!!
Is there anything else you would like to add?
