For starters, what bands were you guys a part of prior to Chasing Hearts? How long has the band been around?
(Brett) I was in a band called The Stars Revolt before I decided to take up singing instead of drumming. Starting Chasing Hearts has been something i've wanted to do for a few years now. Im still a drummer for hire for bands across the country.
Darren was a local band called Widow Society and was also in a band with Jeanie and Zach called Altar Of Lilith before they jumped on board with me to help me out with this project and me and Jeanie were in another metal band several years ago called In Fears End! I have met all these guys thru the local scene over the years and thought that all us together would create a supergroup!
What’s the origin of that name and have you changed the band’s name before?
(Brett) I got the band name Chasing Hearts from a band called Breathe Carolina. They have a song on their Savages album called Chasing Hearts and I just thought it would be a cool name for a band
Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs and do you think these topics will change over time?
(Darren) Lyrically it's usually myself and Brett. We've written about falling out of love, drunken one night stands, and not knowing what to say. You know, your typical weekend. Im sure those topics will change over time - we're writing more music and not ALL of our one night stands are drunken.
What bands are currently inspiring the music that you’re making?
(Brett) We get alot of our inspiration from bands such as Asking Alexandria, I See Stars, Capture The Crown and Broadway. Musically and vocally we're very inspired by the 2008 thru 2012 era of post-hardcore/metalcore with a pop twist in our songs. People say its the rawring 20's this year so we hope to fullfil the nolstaglia people are wanting.
(Darren) Definitely Asking Alexandria, some I See Stars. and this dope band VRSTY. I've also always loved Bring Me the Horizon. Oli Sykes is one of my favorite lyricists.
Was there a particular band/artist or concert that inspired you to start a band?
(Brett) For me there wasnt a band in particular that got me wanting to start a band, it was more of the facisnation of going to my first concert altogether and seeing the band's fans going nuts for them. I wanted that from that point on and had some friends at the same time trying to start bands while I was in high school.
(Zach) For me it would be Avenged sevenfold because they were the first band I really enjoyed listening to. I found out about them in middle school when I started learning percussion which led me to the drum set and wanting to live the rock and roll lifestyle.
(Darren) There were several! Bring Me the Horizon, Motionless in White, Pierce the Veil, hell, even old school bands like Black Sabbath.
What do you do to prepare for a show? Any flexing, exercises, ect …
(Brett) Well I have never been the singer for any previous band before so I cant say I have any pre-show rituals I do but for the bands I drummed for it really was just chilling on the side of the stage with my drum kit and watching the other bands play. Idk why but watching the bands play instead of talking to friends and others right before I go on stage gets me focused
(Jeanie) I always stretch my hands and neck before a show, it helps with dexterity and preventing hand cramps and neck cramps/soreness
(Darren) I always start by drinking throat coat tea the morning of a show, then drink a LOT of water. Before we play, I practice some good belly laughs to get a good feel of my diaphragm, do a few practice screams to warm up my voice, and get those good good leg and core stretches in so I dont destoy myself while crabcoring.
What has been the biggest highlight of the band’s career so far?
(Brett) Biggest highlight for us so far was the debut of our first single "Make Me Believe" on Valentines Day this year! We hope to contiune this momentum we have with releasing an EP by summer and start playing our first shows and tours.
If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?
(Brett) For me personally it would have to be with I See Stars. They are my favorite band of all time and my biggest musical inspiration ever period!
(Jeanie) I would wanna play with Avatar or Wage War I love both of them their music and I think they're cool guys!
Is there anything else you would like to add?
(Brett) Yes! We'd like to let people know that we are on sites such as Spotify, Apple Music, Youtube, Facebook and Instagram so people can check out our music, pics, merch etc! We much more on the way soon.
(Jeanie) Party hardy!
(Darren) Dont try to be someone else. Follow your heart, live your dreams, and BE YOU. The chances of your genetic makeup occuring are astronomically low. Embrace who you are and never let anyone dictate who you are.
