Unsigned Spotlight: Cave Paint

Cave Paint is an experimental jazz rock band whose goal is to create sonic soundscapes to take the listener on a journey.

Please list all of your band members and their roles in the band.

Travis Shirk- Guitars

Dalton Bauder- Bass

Christopher Mundy- Drums

For starters, what bands were you guys a part of prior to Cave Paint? How long has the band been around?

Travis and Dalton were in a few bands before Cave Paint. We were in The Changing Light and Navigator. Also Travis played drums in the bands Marathon, The Stonewall Vessels, and fills in time to time for The Twindows. Chris also plays drums for a band called Nearly York. We all try to stay active within Cave Paint and outside of the band as well.

What’s the origin of that name and have you changed the band’s name before?

Our band name was tricky to come up with. With Spotify, Bandcamp, and all the other streaming sites we wanted to come out with something fairly simple and easy to pronounce. Cave Paint seemed to be the perfect fit for the name. Just the right amount of imagery of a sonic soundscape and the right amount of curiosity when one says the name.

Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs and do you think these topics will change over time?

Travis does most of the structural engineering for the way the songs turn out. But we all bring something to the table and are able to create our own influence and styles into each song together. The themes and topics are a personal journal that gets created through the sonic soundscapes that make Cave Paint who we are. The topics do change over time. They are pretty conceptual to Me (Travis). But we do enjoy keeping this band instrumental so it’s able to translate to the listener to what they feel and hopefully the sounds make them think of something true and meaningful.

What bands are currently inspiring the music that you’re making?

Well we are music junkies so our influences are all over the place. Cause it’s great to come together as a band and all agree that we aren’t trying to be like another band. But as for inspirational bands/artists out there... Foxing, A Great Big Pile Of Leaves, Author, Comrades, Anathallo, The Appleseed Cast, Good Looking Friends, Minus The Bear, As Tall As Lions, From Indian Lakes, and the list goes on and on.

Was there a particular band/artist or concert that inspired you to start a band?

Being in a band and creating something with noise was always a great art outlet for me (Travis). It’s not like a sport that has rules and regulations. You don’t get penalized for creating something that doesn’t make sense. As long as that makes sense to you and makes you who you are today, then I feel like it’s a job well done. But I will say hearing Cap n’ Jazz, Joan of Arc, Owls, and pretty much whatever the Kinsella brothers are apart of made me want to create music.

What do you do to prepare for a show? Any flexing, exercises, ect …

We typically try to do a run down of our set a few days prior for a gig. We don’t necessarily have any exercises or group meetings. We all have lives outside of the band. Dalton lives in Philadelphia, Chris lives in Lancaster PA, and I’m (Travis) in Lebanon PA. So when we get together it’s more of a “Hey I missed you! How’s life??” Kind of exercise. Hahaha.

What has been the biggest highlight of the band’s career so far?

I think being on our tour from 2016 with our friends Narrow Arrow was the biggest highlight thus far. It was so great to play in little towns much like where we are from and see the kids that are building/ keeping underground bands alive in the music scene.

If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?

Me (Travis) personally would love to tour with Foxing and The World Is A Beautiful Place & I’m No Longer Afraid To Die. Both of those bands are going so hard when they play. Always the best energy and performance. They definitely inspire me to keep working harder every time we release something new.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

We have a few shows coming up

8/31 @Mushmoores in Brooklyn NY. W/ Good Looking Friends

9/21 @Seventh Wave Studios in Palmyra PA. W/ Church Girls and Port Ellis

9/22 @The Matty Manor (house show) in Voorhees NJ. W/ Space Cadets.

Keep an eye out for a new single off the new full length coming out. Thank you to everyone who’s been to a show, bought a cd, t-shirt, coffee mug, poster, listened to our songs. We love you all. - Cave Paint
