For starters, what bands were you guys a part of prior to Bloomer? How long has the band been around?

Before this, Luke was in a hardcore skramz band called Past Time and Matt was in a math rock band called Corpusle. One time Luke sat in for a Corpusle show. We featured a spoken word artist who we had apparently told we would play drones, but when the lights went down we just played metal riffs for an hour. Jamie also plays in a garage rock band called Them Animals.

What’s the origin of that name and have you changed the band’s name before?

It’s about self-actualization, realizing your full potential. Luke was really into humanism in college. We were also an acoustic duo for a minute called Pennington, then we switched it back to Bloomer and went electric.

Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs and do you think these topics will change over time

Usually Luke writes the songs. They’re mostly inspired by personal experiences, but written in a way where anyone could apply the lyrics to their own life. Lots of stuff about relationships and being a 20-something. Sometimes Matt writes about his favorite foods.

Was there a particular band/artist or concert that inspired you to start a band?

Well we’re really into Phish and the Grateful Dead. It’s interesting the way they create a different show each night. They pay attention to the audience in such an intimate way. We also like stuff that’s heavy and poppy, like Dinosaur Jr and Coheed and Cambria. In general, bands that have a dedicated fan base and exist outside of their time period. I mean, at the height of hair metal Phish was playing jazz. We were pretty into prog when we started this band but over time we realized that not very many people can actually relate to that type of music. So now we write pop songs with rock arrangements.

What do you do to prepare for a show? Any flexing, exercises, ect …

Sometimes Luke does vocal warm ups in a closet. Matt usually usually forgets something. We try not to play any of the songs on the setlist for a few days, that way we know it’ll have a fresh energy on stage.

What has been the biggest highlight of the band’s career so far?

We’re proud of what we’ve done so far but still have a lot on the agenda. Being a band during the “streaming” era has its pros and cons, but one thing we’re confident in is our ability to play live and put on an engaging show. There seems to be new festivals every year and since we’re coming from a background that values innovative performances, we think we’ve arrived at the right time in that regard.

If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?

In 1970 there was a huge train tour in Canada called the Festival Express. The Dead, Janis Joplin, The Band, Flying Burrito Brothers and Buddy Guy were all on it. Phil Lesh said there would be a different jam session happening in each train car. We’d love to be a part of something like that, or really anything where the artists get to create an interactive experience with the fans. Too many times there’s a person on stage just staring down at their pedals… The show is supposed to be for the audience.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

We have a hilarious music video for Last Star coming out soon and an EP in the works. It’s been a long time coming but we feel like we’re finally ready to put something out as a body of work.
