Unsigned Spotlight: Black Sea Deluge

Black Sea Deluge are a dark, melodic and crushingly heavy band at the same time.

Please list all of your band members and their roles in the band.

Logan Stoll - Bass/Vocals
Braedon Sutherland (Me) - Lead Guitar
Gareth Baird - Rhythm Guitar
James Van Meter - Drums

For starters, what bands were you guys a part of prior to Black Sea Deluge? How long has the band been around?

Logan's currently in another band called The Escapist Notion, I have been in several bands and have a solo project called Ballad of a Downfall. James has also been in a band called Peacekeeper. Black Sea Deluge has been around since early 2014.

What’s the origin of that name and have you changed the band’s name before?

The black sea deluge was a flood hypothesis from biblical times, the imagery matches well with the sort of music we want to release as it is both unconventional and poetic. The band's name hasn't changed so far.

Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs and do you think these topics will change over time?

Writing songs is primarily an effort between Logan and myself. James goes through the songs afterwards and adds his own drum parts. I wrote all the guitar solos before Gareth had joined the band but Gareth will be co-writing after our upcoming album.

What bands are currently inspiring the music that you’re making?

The Human Abstract, Corelia, Between the Buried and Me, Invent, Animate, Periphery and a lot of classical stuff. Logan listens to a lot of heavier stuff, I listen to lots of acoustic and electronic/soundtrack whereas Gareth listens to a lot of classic rock and James listens to a lot of progressive metal.

Was there a particular band/artist or concert that inspired you to start a band?

Not in particular. Three of Black Sea Deluge's songs were finished when it was still just myself. Logan did a great job of taking my vision and running with it, and together we've written some solid material.

What do you do to prepare for a show? Any flexing, exercises, ect …

We all like to unwind, have a drink or just stand around and laugh. I'm a pretty nervous person so the biggest thing is just talking to my band and being comfortable that we all have each others' backs.

What has been the biggest highlight of the band’s career so far?

Having a wall of death at our first gig was pretty astonishing!

If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?

We would be down to tour with just about anyone! Avenged Sevenfold, Atreyu and Every Time I Die would be pretty great to tour with, can't speak for the rest of the guys.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

We have a 3 track sampler out available for download on our bandcamp page and an album coming out in early 2015. Keep your ears open!
