Unsigned Spotlight: Between The Rain

Please list all of your band members and their roles in the band.
We are: Tim Donlon, guitar and vocals, Victoria Rothman, bass, and Xavier Martinez, drums.

For starters, what bands were you guys a part of prior to Between The Rain? How long has the band been around?

Victoria's been in a couple of bands including an all-female punk band out of Long Island called Out Of Order, Xavier jammed with neighborhood musicians and played in a band before this one, and Tim spent time in a Boston group called Still Sinking a ways back. Between The Rain took a while to find permanent members. We finally came together in 2013.

What’s the origin of that name and have you changed the band’s name before?

The name "Between The Rain" is from the movie JFK when describing someone doing as they please with impunity. It's also part of a line in the Counting Crows' song "Round Here." The name has always been the same.

Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs and do you think these topics will change over time?

An idea for a song will come from any of the three of us and then the role of the other two is to polish the idea. We don't really have common themes for song's topics but making sure that some are true accounts from members of the band and some are fictitious or based on myths has always been a focus. So far it doesn't look like it'll change but our outlook certainly could so who knows!

What bands are currently inspiring the music that you’re making?

Led Zeppelin, Silversun Pickups, Tool, Witchcraft, Deftones, Chevelle. It's quite a spectrum for us.

Was there a particular band/artist or concert that inspired you to start a band?

Not specifically. We all have an obsession with music in different ways and with aspects of modern rock. Arriving at this band was a slow and steady process for all three of us.

What do you do to prepare for a show? Any flexing, exercises, etc …

Run of the mill I suppose. Jumping around and yelling. Stretches, stuff like that.

What has been the biggest highlight of the band’s career so far?

Getting praise from established musicians has always felt like a high point for us.

If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?

We'd love to play with Chevelle or 10 Years because we've always thought our sounds would gel live. Also, playing with STP while Scott Weiland was around would have been a dream. We look up to them a lot.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

We'll be up and down the East Coast in the next year so keep an eye out!
