Unsigned Spotlight: Best Behavior

Please list all of your band members and their roles in the band.

Alex Gruenburg: Songwriter, Vocals, Guitar

Dan Jacobson: Bass, Vocals

Chris Jimenez: Drums, Vocals

For starters, what bands were you guys a part of prior to Best Behavior? How long has the band been around?

We have all been playing around Brooklyn for awhile in grungier, punk bands but Best Behavior got started about 2 years ago.

What’s the origin of that name and have you changed the band’s name before?

We like the idea that if someone asks you to be on your "best behavior" you probably aren't that way on the regular.

Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs and do you think these topics will change over time?

I (Alex)write the songs and bring them to the band. We riff on that idea. A lot of the songs are a focus on the lens that I see the world through. I feel like a stranger in a lot of different settings and you start to notice strange details that way.

What bands are currently inspiring the music that you’re making?

We love the new Alvvays record. "In Undertow" is such an amazing song. We're actually covering it in our live set.

Was there a particular band/artist or concert that inspired you to start a band?

I was watching the Black Lips play at the House of Vans and had such a good time I wanted to start my own garage band.

What do you do to prepare for a show? Any flexing, exercises, etc …

We all do a few warm-ups before the show but Chris is kind of our guru for that. He keeps us fit. He'll do a full yoga routine and immediately chug a beer before our set. A true champion.

What has been the biggest highlight of the band’s career so far?

Playing Savannah Stopover was definitely a memorable moment. We were playing an early set in the afternoon and really brought the house down. People were in the streets trying to see us play. So much fun.

If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?

James Brown. Hands down. We'd love to learn some tricks from the Godfather himself.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Everything is going to be okay.
