Unsigned Spotlight: Ben Hazlewood

For starters, tell us a bit about the history of Ben Hazlewood, where you came from and how you came to be where you are now?

I grew up around performing. My Dad was a singer and my Mum was a dance teacher so it was a big part of my childhood. I started writing my own music at 13 years old and fronted a couple of bands throughout high school.

I moved to London to pursue music then ended up in Australia where I was a finalist on The Voice and am now spending my time writing and touring in the U.S.

Have been involved in any other musical projects before this one?

I've been part of many different music groups and bands from hard rock to pop. I always love working with other artists or musicians it always seems to bring something different into the mix.

Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs and do you think these topics will change over time?

I write my music. Sometimes by myself, sometime with other songwriters and producers or just with friends that are musicians. Usually I write about whats going on with me. Songwriting is my release my expression of moments and feelings that I can’t usually put into words until there is music.

What artists are currently inspiring the music that you’re making?

Listening to Bishop Briggs  her angst is awesome! I feel like we have that in common! Daughter is another favourite at the moment love her lyrics and mood of their tracks.

Was there a particular band/artist or concert that inspired you to get into music professionally?

I don’t think there was ever one band. I just remembered when I was younger and seeing any kind of performance just thinking “I wanna be on that stage, I want to be that guy."

What do you do to prepare for a show? Any special drinks, flexing, exercises, ect …

Not really just a heap of vocal warm ups so I can smash it when I get up there. Also, sometimes a shot of tequila.

What has been the biggest highlight of your career so far?

Releasing VANTA my latest EP and performing those tracks live on my first U.S tour.

If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?

I would love to have been around to see or tour with Janis Joplin or the doors.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Pumped about EOS being released early next year. Part two to VANTA
