Unsigned Spotlight: Barracks

Barracks are a post hardcore band from New Zealand.

Please list all of your band members and their roles in the band.

Simon Power - Drums
Judd Ipsen - Vocals
Kane Lazenby - Bass
Tom Revell - Guitar / vocals
Martin Mihaka - Guitar / vocals

For starters, what bands were you guys a part of prior to Barracks? How long has the band been around?

Martin, Kane and Simon were in a band called Acalmbefore, Simon used to play in Slipping Tongue, Machete Justice and sometimes Saving Grace. Barracks have been around since 2010. I used to sing in a couple of bands.. This is Tom's first band and he's growing up so fast.

What’s the origin of that name and have you changed the band’s name before?

I’m not sure as of the origin as I joined the band after they chose, but I know it’s always been Barracks. Before they chose the name they were called Zombie Heist. I think they called it Barracks because someone told them not to.

Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs and do you think these topics will change over time?

We all write the songs and our vocalist writes the lyrics. Most of them are about mental health issues and trying to find a way through. Anxiety, depression.. Talking about your feelings is one of those things that a lot of people don't share, so I wanted to so maybe other people would want to, too.

What bands are currently inspiring the music that you’re making?

Poison The Well, Defeater, Barrow, Deftones, Emarosa.

Was there a particular band/artist or concert that inspired you to start a band?

For me it was probably Linkin Park when I was 12.. But I think every 23 year old is guilty of that.

What do you do to prepare for a show? Any flexing, exercises, ect …

I usually drink honey / lemon tea and freak out out the back for a bit.

What has been the biggest highlight of the band’s career so far?

Releasing our debut album and seeing it do better than we ever could have imagined. Other than that, just hanging out and meeting new bros is always the best.

If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?

Maybe someone like Thursday or Underoath.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Our album is free from www.barracksmusic.com and I think you'll like it!
