Mathew Lustosa- Bass/Vocals
Lukas Vitullo- Drums
For starters, what bands were you guys a part of prior to As Within, So Without? How long has the band been around?
Lukas Vitullo: Well, me and our guitarist Mike used to jam older metalcore covers, I then met Mitchell (vocals) and Mathew (bass/Vocals) and the rest is history, Matt Tzovolos was not in a band prior to As Within, So Without. We picked him up as our second guitarist and we all form the unit that is As Within, So Without.
What’s the origin of that name and have you changed the band’s name before?
Lukas Vitullo: The band was formed under a different name during the early stages, our name As Within, So Without came from a former member of the band and this was the only name anyone could agree on. But he ended up leaving soon as they changed the name and I joined at the same time he was leaving. As far as where he got the name from I’m not sure! We love our band name.
Who writes your songs?
Mitchell Lustosa: All of us collectively write all the music. We each have our own creative input on the songs.
What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs and do you think these topics will change over time?
Mitchell Lustosa: All of the lyrical themes are very emotionally driven and come from situations that we’ve encountered in our lives.
What bands are currently inspiring the music that you’re making?
Matt Tzovolos: It’s hard to pinpoint exact bands, but all of us are fans of extremely varying genres. I personally listen to a lot of European metal with the soaring leads, while Mitchell, for example, listens to a lot of pop punk and draws influence from that.
Was there a particular band/artist or concert that inspired you to start a band?
Lukas Vitullo: When I was a toddler my dad got me into Metallica and Mudvayne and those were the bands that inspired me to pursue music.
Matt Tzovolos: I was always a huge fan of Metallica, and my biggest dream was to be James Hetfield.
Mike Fiorino: I was very interested in Avenged Sevenfold, which led me to more genres of music. This transition inspired me to make music of my own and I picked up the guitar.
What do you do to prepare for a show? Any flexing, exercises, etc …
Luke Vitullo: Usually an hour and a half before our set, I’ll warm up for an hour and then for the remaining time I usually stretch to get loose and clear my mind. Right before our set, we huddle in a circle and tell each not to screw up and kill it like it’s our last show.
What has been the biggest highlight of the band’s career so far?
Matt Tzovolos: We recently played a sold-out local show, and most of the crowd was ours. Nothing compares to looking into a crowd of people and seeing a wave of your bands' shirts, filled with people cheering for the music you’re playing.
If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?
Everyone: Some bands we would want to tour with are Fit For A King, August Burns Red, Attila, Wage War. These are some of our favorite bands and biggest personal influences, and it would be a dream come true to tour with any of these bands.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
Luke Vitullo: We recently put out a new album called “Into Oblivion” and it is available on all platforms, thanks for reading and we hope to see you guys at a show this year!
