Unsigned Spotlight: Andrew Thomases

Andrew Thomases brings a positive twist to Summer 2022 with "You Have One Job To Do," a poignant song that both pays tribute to his late brother and encourages us to leave the world a better place than when we entered it.

Were there any moments from your life that inspired you to write “You Have One Job To Do”?

I wrote “You Have One Job To Do” shortly after my younger brother passed away from kidney cancer in 2020. He and I shared the same philosophy of looking out for others and paying it forward – trying to help those who were less fortunate. My brother, in particular, embodied that philosophy, although he was too humble to admit it. So, the song is certainly a tribute to him and to all others who are dedicated to helping others. We all have one job to do, and that is to leave the world a better place.

Were there any struggles you faced during the songwriting process?

The music came easily, and I really enjoyed writing the bass line. The lyrics were a bit painful to write, as they reminded me of my brother. I wanted to hit the right message with the right tone without being too preachy. I wanted to be true to my brother. The writing process was emotional, but I am very happy with the final work product.

Do you have a favorite line from “You Have One Job To Do”?

I like the line from the third verse that is a bit of a call to action:

It’s tempting to live your life

Just from day to day

Going about your business

In your own selfish way.

(How ‘bout)

Improve the life of others

Pay it forward every day

Imagine all the good we’d do.

If we didn’t stray.

How long was the process for writing this song?

The song took a few months to write and record. I often write my songs in pieces, with music tracks first, adding layers on top, until the music is complete. I think, write and record the vocals. For “You Have One Job To Do,” I wrote and recorded the bass and drum tracks first. After that I laid down the guitar tracts and other tracks. Only then did I sit down to write the lyrics, and once they were all written did I record the vocals.

Were there any lines that you cut from “You Have One Job To Do” that you wanted to keep in originally?

I am sure there were tons of those, but I honestly can’t recall any specifics. They are lost on the digital cutting room floor.

Did you find anything surprising during the songwriting process?

I have always loved reggae and wanted a reggae sound in the verses of the song. However, I was surprised how tricky it was to get a reggae rhythm because I am so used to “regular” rock songs and rhythms. Once I got the hang of it, though, it started to flow more easily.

What is the most impactful message from the song that resonates with you?

The entire song is a call to action to be conscious about doing the right thing for others and to go out of your way to be a better person, so that we can all leave the world in a better place than when we entered it. As the chorus goes, “You have one job to do now, Just one life to live. Everything you do somehow, Must be positive.”

What can your fans look forward to from you for the rest of the year?

Thanks for asking. I have a new single, “Two Sides,” out on September 9. It is a classic rock song, with hints of Tom Petty. The song examines how we sometimes have two leanings in our personalities. For me, it is being torn to always wanting to be social and outgoing, while also wanting my own time and my own space. In the end, both are fine. As the song explains, the dividing line depends on the time, and where your head is at any given moment. Thanks for listening!
