Unsigned Spotlight - AFTYN
A simplistic indie/folk duo, AFTYN are hellbent on keeping it personal. AFTYN aims to evoke an updated 70’s folk sound, blended with both classic and alternative influences who self describe themselves as ‘modern hippies’.
Please list all of your band members and their roles in the band.
Guinnevere Philipp - Songwriter, Vocalist, Guitar, Piano, Uke
Chris Maher - Producer, Guitar, Bass, Drum
For starters, what bands were you guys a part of prior to AFTYN? How long has the band been around?
Chris: I used to play in a hard rock band called Ascension Drive before starting AFTYN with Guinnevere. We’ve been playing together since March 2019.
Guinnevere: I was not in any bands prior to this, but I played some solo sets around the area.
What’s the origin of that name and have you changed the band’s name before?
“Aftyn” is actually Guinnevere’s middle name! When we started writing original music and were looking for inspiration, we looked at the origins of some of our favorite band names. We learned that Dawes is the middle of Taylor Goldsmith, vocalist of the band Dawes, so we went with AFTYN and it has not changed since.
Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs and do you think these topics will change over time?
When it comes to lyrical writing, it is entirely Guinnevere. The subject matter ranges from friendships, past relationships, changes in life and dealing with feelings. Most songs are very personal and find a vague way to relate universal feelings.
What bands are currently inspiring the music that you’re making?
Some of the bands/artists that we have been listening to and drawing inspiration from include Dawes, The Tallest Man on Earth, Courtney Marie Andrews, Butch Walker, and Taylor Swift.
Was there a particular band/artist or concert that inspired you to start a band?
Chris: Rise Against was my favorite band in high school and is the biggest reason I fell in love with music and wanted to play in a band. Since then, many different artists such as Ace Enders and Butch Walker have inspired me to create different styles of music.
Guinnevere: My father has always played music and been in multiple bands; My father was my inspiration to start playing instruments and singing.
What do you do to prepare for a show? Any flexing, exercises, ect …
We usually prepare for a show by doing some kind of non-musical activity together before the show such as grabbing dinner or taking a walk around the venue to relax before the show.
What has been the biggest highlight of the band’s career so far?
We had the privilege of headlining the first Food Truck Festival for The Music Barn in Mullica Hill, NJ. They are a brand new outdoor venue located nearby who started around the same time as us, so we have been fortunate to see each other grow.
If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?
Chris: I would love to do an acoustic tour with Tim McIlrath from Rise Against and Butch Walker. Seeing how both of them translate their song to an acoustic guitar is very inspiring to myself and our music.
Guinnevere: I would like to hop on next year’s 2021 tour with The Tallest Man on Earth and Courntey Marie Andrews. They are two of my all time favorite artists and I would love the opportunity to open for them.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
We would love to thank anyone who listens to our music and this new album. We worked so hard on this album and all of the songs over the last year and are very excited to share it with the world and play some new songs for everyone.
