Track By Track: Painless - No Help
Painless’ new EP, No Help came out June 22nd. For the occasion, we asked vocalist Jacob Shaw to tell us about each track. His commentary on the EP can be seen below.
1. Ominous Wind
This was one of the last songs we wrote for the EP - Mike sent this to me and it was basically structureless, and after I demoed my vocals over it, we decided it was kinda cool that way. We kept it short and sweet and I think it’s awesome.
2. Spellbinder
The second I heard this one, I knew it was going to be one of my favorites. Mike wrote this one, and our bassist Mark did the arrangement. This one is very dynamic, chilled out verses and then the big chorus. It dips into the really heavy dissonant chug stuff for a brief second, and then back into the last chorus. I love it.
3. Hungry
My personal favorite, probably because this was the first song that was presented to me when we all joined together. I did my thing on the demo and everyone liked it, so the final version is virtually identical to the demo. This song is essentially what gave rise to Painless so it will always be near and dear to my heart.
4. Fish Hook
The guys and myself are all known for a certain sound, and this song is a pretty solid representation of that, with a little bit of the new direction thrown in with the chorus. Straight up heavy kill someone with an office desk breakdowns and insanity chords nonstop, and then a weird almost Korn-esque chorus thrown in there. Speaks for itself.
5. The Sight
This song probably went through the most change from demo to final version. We shuffled the structure around a few times, and then ultimately I decided to have Daniel “DL” Laskiewicz (who produced with us) to put some stank on the chorus with his pipes. It’s hard to pick favorites when you love all the music so much, but certain parts of this song are some of my favorite stuff that we’ve written.
Absolutely cannot wait to have more tunes for everyone very soon.
