Track by Track: Aatmaa - Cataclysm

Aatmaa’s new record, “Cataclysm” was released today. For the occasion, we asked the band to tell us about each track.

When Ashwin and Shara Deepankar started Aatmaa during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, they viewed the band as an outlet to express (and process) their complex responses to a very fraught period. But as the Chicago-based married couple recorded the dark, intense music on their debut album Cataclysm, they landed on a sound that transcended any finite time period—and instead reflects on more universal themes: personal upheaval, the emotional toll of loss, and navigating depression and anxiety.

“Suffering Ahead”

Understanding the fragility of life.

“Low Lights”

When the good times become distant memories. Understanding the unsustainability of long-term addiction.

“The Worst In People”

This song is about finding out who you are and accepting your truest self. It’s about you owing it to yourself to be you regardless of other’s opinions of you.

“Her Stoning”

Longing. Longing for someone who will never be ready for you no matter how hard you try.

“Solstice”

Losing the one you love most, unexpectedly. We wanted to capture what those first few moments are like when you don't get to say goodbye.

“Hidden Bruises”

This song is about the victory in running away. Running from people, relationships, or organizations that are purposely trying to keep you from your full potential.

“Where The Power Lies”

This song is about living in fear, separating from your community, and being your own hero. When others around you fail to keep their promises, you do everything you can to keep your promises to yourself. Regardless where it leads you.

“It Sleeps”

This song is about a person you love becoming your biggest enemy and trying to survive the fall out.

“Dementia Pending”

The end. We felt the best way to end the album was with the end. We hear stories and have seen first-hand with some of our loved ones who are full of regret leading up to their physical death in this life. We wanted to give voice to that person who has the understanding that they were not a good person in this life but is selfishly wanting to hear how much they meant to their loved ones in this world.
