“How The Light Gets In” is one of those rare, special songs that kind of just fell out of my hands fully formed. I have a phone recording of me doing it as I was writing it and it’s pretty much all there. It was always going to be the last song on the album and I immediately heard a string section on it. I played a mellotron part there on the demo but we wanted something closer to the real thing.
Our drummer Ben is friends with Michael Omartian and he reached out to him about possibly doing a string arrangement and he loved the song so he was happy to do it. One of the best musical experiences I’ve ever had was of Michael insisting I sit in his chair in the studio to listen to the arrangement. We’re all very proud of how this one turned out.
