Show Review: Bad Ass Weekend III
Yesterday rounded off the last of the Bad Ass Weekend festivities this year and really brought the beginning of the punk/metal/grindcore calender in Houston for this year. This event in it's third year, was brought to us by Jaron Sayers and JC Newton and boy did it go off with a bang! With some of the headliners including the likes of Napalm Death, Who Killed Spikey Jacket?, and Goverment Issue this line-up was pretty much garenteed to sell out their respective venues.
The first day was focused more on the hardcore punk and crusty side of the festival with Goverment Issue, WKSJ?, Common Ignorance, and a plethora of local heros playing short and fast paced sets upstiars while the local homeless convention, I mean crust punk show packed the house downstairs kept the pit going and drinks flying. This was my personal favorite day of the fest, although I'm biased because one of my favorite bands (Common Ignorance) played this night.
The second date of the fest was the unquestionable main day with the de-facto headliners, Napalm Death ripping through a chaotic set in all of it's grindy glory. The grindcore innovators were supported by fellow heavy act, Voivod and my personal favorite thrash metal supergroup, Iron Regan. Due to the party thrash nature of this day, I'll give it the drunkest day of the fest award 2015.
Sunday was the church goers matinee featuring nationally touring contemporary christian bands such as Arctic Flowers, The Secret Prostitues, and fantastic local houston crust influenced post-punk band, Gast. All in all, if you missed the festival this year, you blew it. Be on the look out next year because the line-up should be even more stacked.
