Review: Capsize - A Reintroduction: The Essence Of All That Surrounds Me

Today, post-hardcore act, Capsize released their sophomore album titled A Reintroduction: The Essence Of All That Surrounds Me through Equal Vision. This has been an album that I have long since been awaiting as the singles that have been released thus far have been very impressive. It's a bit of a change of pace for this act, taking a more melodic route and adding many more clean vocals from Daniel.

The album opens with "XX (Sew My Eyes)" which is the first single that was released and a solid start to A Reintroduction... This song offers catchy riffs that seem to yo-yo back and forth with dissonance and really capture your attention. Vocalist, Daniel Wand adds cleans to this song that contrast well against his tumultuous yells. "I Think It's Best We Don't Talk Anymore" slams with far more clean vocals than the rest of the album. Wand does well in transitioning seamlessly between his cleans and yells, providing a dynamic movement throughout the song. This is a song that doesn't require a breakdown to still be aggressive and angsty, a quality that is underappreciated (in my opinion). "Tear Me Apart" expresses Wands vocals in the best light on this album, showing a broader range and at times even sounding reminiscent of Oliver Sykes clean vocals circa Sempiternal. This song features Brendan Murphy of Counterparts. While there isn't a song on this album that isn't dripping with emotion, "Safe Place" is particularly moving and offers a much different vibe than the rest of the album. This song is much more somber and only utilizes clean vocals. Instrumentation on this song is docile in comparison to the rest of the album, but makes for a very intimate and refreshing moment. "You Got The Wrong Idea" puts into music the idea that you shouldn't judge a book by it's cover and has one hell of a catchy chorus. The album closes out with my personal favorite "The Same Pain" A strong closer to the album, this song hits heavy in every aspect of the word. There is a lot of aggression in this song, combined with chilling guitar riffs, a breakdown, and a stark contrast between vocals.

This album is the maturation I had both expected and hoped for from Capsize. The album has all of the instrumentals and riffs that we have come to love from Capsize and the addition of more melodic vocals and choruses, turning them into a post-hardcore dream. This album is going to grab the attention of a lot of new fans for Capsize and I can't wait to see how they grow from here!
