Actors, Musicians, And Athletes Join Forces For “Abortion Within Reach” Campaign

A number of actors, musicians, and athletes have joined forces as part of “The Abortion Within Reach” campaign. The following was said about that initiative in a press release:

“The Abortion Within Reach campaign was launched today by a coalition of organizations: Abortion Care Network, National Netowork of Abortion Funds, NOISE FOR NOW and Seeding Sovereignty.

The right of every American to access safe and legal abortion is under threat. Already, many people in the US live with abortion out of reach. 2021 was the worst year on record for anti-abortion legislation, and this summer, the Supreme Court may gut or even overturn Roe V Wade which would result in abortion being outlawed in half of the states in the US.

The Abortion Within Reach campaign hosts a list of demands drafted by abortion funds to spotlight the release of their first collective vision for the future of abortion access as the stakes for care escalate across the country. These demands have been signed onto by nearly 100 celebrities and growing.”

Amelia Bauer, Co-Founder and Executive Director of NOISE FOR NOW and Janet MacGillivray, Founder and Co-Executive Director of Seeding Sovereignty, also added:

“It is a great honor to see this coalition of organizations come together in support of these Demands for Abortion Within Reach, drafted by abortion funds. NOISE FOR NOW and Seeding Sovereignty are grateful to our growing circle of artists, performers and athletes enthusiastically lending their voices to support independent abortion clinics, abortion funds and our ongoing fight for body sovereignty and reproductive justice.”

Here's their list of demands:

●      Accessible, compassionate, affirming abortion care for people of all idenitities that is safe for everyone who needs it;

●      Support for and access to a full range of abortion options without criminalization, stigma, and harrassment;

●      The explicit legal right of young people to consent to their own sexual and reproductive health care;

●      People having and who have had abortions to be seen and valued as leaders;

●      Organized philanthropy to commit long-term to resource abortion funds

●      Reproductive health and rights organizations to include and trust local abortion fund leadership

●      The end to criminalization, punishment, and harassment of any pregnancy outcome.

Jonnette Paddy (Diné), abortion fund manager at Indigenous Women Rising, also commented:

“As the only abortion fund led by Indigenous people and that supports Native and Indigenous folks nationwide, we demand that abortions are safe, accessible, free, and our people are not criminalized or punished for their decisions. Indigenous communities have experienced centuries of violence, coercion, and colonization. We’ve been robbed of our land, our freedoms, and our dignity for far too long. We are linking arms with abortion funds across the country to set a clear path forward, honor our ancestors’ legacy, and fight for our sovereignty.”

 Eloisa Lopez, executive director of the Abortion Fund of Arizona, continued:

“In times of crisis and political upheaval, abortion funds have been stepping up because U.S. systems have always failed us, and this moment is no exception. Now, we demand that our government show up for us by directly funding abortion care and practical, logistical support with a guarantee that abortion will be covered by all insurance providers, including Medicaid. We also demand that the philanthropic community prioritize us long-term with unrestricted funding. Abortion funds are doing the work. As more of us face abortion bans in our states, including Arizona, it’s time we get the support we need.”
