5 Albums That Influenced Me: JT Cavey of Texas In July
Texas In July are on the road doing a headliner after completing their yet to be titled new album. Their new vocalist, JT Cavey took some time to discuss 5 albums that have had a huge influence on his life. Check them out below.
Green Day - Dookie
With my influences at a young age coming from mainly older neighborhood kids and my parents, I heard Green Day for the first time somewhere and they drew me like none other. Punk rock was the gateway for me away from mainstream music.
Disturbed - The Sickness
I heard "Stupify" on the radio back in 8th grade and I had never heard such an angry and heavier band in my life. They really tapped into that young angst and I was always thirsty for the next thing to draw me in musically. I still jam this album front to back.
As I Lay Dying - Frail Words Collapse
This is where my addiction for music really began. At the time of the release, this was the first time I had heard a band with an all screaming vocal style. I had no idea what they were saying but Limp Bizkit and Papa Roach were not cutting it anymore. I needed something faster, heavier, and intense. This was my cure.
Killswitch Engage - End of Heartache
Killswitch Engage was releasing music at the same time As I Lay Dying was, also within the same genre. This was the first time I heard more melodies within the vocal styles and actual singing. Since I am a fan of all genres, it was amazing to find an album that had tapped into all my joys in music.
The Ghost Inside - Returners
On one hand, it's ironic how I just came off tour with these gents and we are all now friends, but it would be a lie to say this album didn't open my eyes on what music can do. I was around 21 at the time and somewhat picky about my musical tastes and not listening to anything even close to hardcore. I heard "Between The Lines" from a friend and I had never been so impassioned by a song. Along with the upbeat riff style and more overall, hope-filled positive vibes, this was the first time I really paid attention to lyrical content. Hearing a band really speak out about what they stand for through a power voice like Jonathan Vigil was all I needed to show me who I wanted to become.
