This theme song for Call Of Duty: Black Ops II was composed by Nine Inch Nails and How to Destroy Angels frontman Trent Reznor. The game sees the video game's protagonist fighting in proxy wars for the United States in the Cold War. "There is a lot of reservation and angst and sense of loss and regret and anger bubbling under the surface," Reznor said to Rolling Stone regarding the first-person shooter's storyline. "So it didn't make sense to have a gung ho patriotic feeling kind of theme song. It has to feel weighty."

Much of the material that ended up on the album, including "Thursday's Child" was originally used, in alternate versions, for the video game Omikron: The Nomad Soul. He explained to Cuepoint: "They asked me if I wanted to do this collaboration, and I'm a big video gamer myself, so that was a dream to do something like that. When I started making the track, I was playing the game and got a bunch of ideas. I wanted to create something for the dancefloor and the actual game, so that's how that track came about."
